Laser Depigmentation of the Gingiva

Gingival depigmentation

Melanin pigmentation of the gingiva is a common occurrence and is completely benign. Some patients like to have their gums lightened for esthetic reasons. The LightWalker Er:YAG laser is well suited for this procedure. It allows for removal of the pigment layer with minimal trauma and only minor post operative discomfort. The unique ability of the Er:YAG laser to remove soft tissue with almost no thermal effect allows for extremely precise removal of the melanin from oral tissues.

The procedure is done in under an hour with local anesthesia. Post operative restrictions are minimal, mostly avoiding very hot or spicy foods and liquids for a few days. The gums heal in a week or so. The case pictured above shows the healing at a two week follow-up.
