Throughout the medical field, a biopsy is simply the removal of a tissue sample to be diagnosed via laboratory analysis. In dentistry, teeth and gums are sent for biopsy. The role of a biopsy in the dental industry is to properly diagnose oral growths. It is important to note that the great majority of lesions removed from the mouth are benign.
Our office performs all biopsies with a laser. In the majority of instances this can be performed with topical anesthesia only and no suture is needed. This minimally invasive approach to removing oral growths results in very little postoperative discomfort. If you have unexplained lesions in your mouth, they need to be examined by a dentist. They may or may not be cancerous, but they need medical attention nonetheless.
